Indira Gandhi

Indira Gandhi followed her father Jawaharlal Nehru’s footsteps and became the Prime Minister of India, in 1966. She held the post for three consecutive terms and a fourth term in 1980 until she was assassinated in 1984.

 

Indira Gandhi was born in 1917 in Allahabad in Anand Bhavan, the palatial ancestral home of the wealthy and politically active Nehru family. Her Father, Jawaharlal Nehru, became India’s first Prime Minister and like her grandfather, Moti Lal Nehru, had been totally absorbed in the struggle for an independent India from an early age. After three attempts at the entrance exams, Indira arrived at Somerville College in the autumn of 1937. She followed her father’s footsteps and became the Prime Minister of India, in 1966. She held the post for three consecutive terms and a fourth term in 1980 until she was assassinated in 1984.
